  5. The key may be in the fact it is an external modem.  A few months back I got 
  6. a new Sportster 28.8 and had similar problems.  I had just installed a new 
  7. controller card with 65550 uarts so I could use this new fast modem.  I had 
  8. all sorts of quirkiness - freezes during large downloads, interrupts in
  9. browsing and problems with even terminal connections.  It turns out I didn't 
  10. set the port speed above the old 9600 setting!  Windows 95 indicated it 
  11. recognized and was using the new uarts and I or no one I called for help 
  12. thought of the port speed.  Try setting it to 115200 bps using hardware flow 
  13. control or none.  Also I had trouble with the buffers, but you said you 
  14. turned them off.  This helped me.  The fact you say you can connect at a 
  15. lower speed seems to indicate this might be it.  I sure hope so, it took me 
  16. weeks to figure out.  Oh, I didn't remember to ask, but you do have 65550 
  17. uarts don't you?  If not the old 8250's won't work well (at all) above 9600!
